"11 Ghanaians murdered in Togo" by: Kwame Acheampong of StarrFMonline - Jan.8 (Click here to read full article)
To summarize this article, 11 Ghanians in Togo were murdered. The victims were beheaded and shot. They were believed to be victims of "modern day slavery" from northern Ghana and were returning home after a yearlong toiling in fields of wealthy commercial farming in Nigeria. There is a common practice in the two poverty stricken districts where parents of teenagers are often tricked to enter a year agreement with some rich individuals from Nigeria. The parents are promised good jobs and improved living conditions, their teenage kids are then handed over to their new masters.
My thoughts on this article are a simple as that I had no idea modern slavery was this bad. Imagine the parents' minds after they hear their children have been killed in such a horrible way because they pretty much handed them away to slave owners. While the parents may not have done it intentionally the parents must feel some level of guilt.
This ties into culture because this seems to happen frequently in African countries, maybe not to this extent but it happens none the less. Also, this particular situation only happens among two districts, leading me to believe there is some religious or cultural dissagreemants.
